So I'm looking to buy a digital SLR camera, and that is about all I know. Nikon or Canon? What type? Any additional information would help a lot.

My personal preference is Canon, but that is all opinionative. I started out with Canon about 15 years ago, switched to Nikon for a 2 year period, then right back to Canon. I think the product quality is excellent, great customer support, and they have much more selection than Nikon (ex.lenses, accessories.)

I don't think you will need any extra lenses right from the start, but as you get more experience you can add what you will need.

The top 3 DSLR's by Canon that I would recommend for you are:

Lower End: Canon T2i $650
http://www.amazon.com/...0035FZJHQ/

Middle: Canon T3i $800 (My last camera)
http://www.amazon.com/...004J3V90Y/

High End: Canon 60D $1200 (Current Camera)
http://www.amazon.com/...0040JHVC2/

Between the 3, if you are really low on money, you can get the T2i, but I would highly recommend the T3i for the extra $150. But once again, if you have the extra $400, the Canon 60D blows the T3i completely out of the water. I LOVE it, a few key extra than the T3i, but they make a difference in quality.

Some Accessories you will definitely need:

Camera Bag- Canon 2400 $35 (Holds EVERYTHING)
http://www.amazon.com/...0002Y5WZM/

Tripod- Pearstone VT-2100 $70 (Unfortunately ou will need to spend a little bit of money on you tripod, because it holds it most of the time, and you wouldn't want it to fall over and break your $1000 camera would you?)

SD Card- Transcend 32GB Class 10 $35 (to hold all of your photos/video, this is one of the bigger sizes, and it is really fast)

Hope I could help!

I'm looking for an SLR as well. I would go to a BestBuy or Sams Club to actually feel and handle the camera. It's all personal preference, what works for you, what has what you want.
High megapixel count, articulating screen, user-friendly, etc.
I observed and handled some today at a BestBuy. My conclusion was that Nikon was a little easier to use, and Canon had a few more megapixels on more models and were a tad bit more big, also sorta confusing.(But that's just me) Not to say Canon isn't easy to use. I couldn't fully employ all the features of the cameras, so that's going off what I found. But then you'll have to decide "who do i want to be buying lenses from?" Because Nikon lenses won't work with Canon cameras. So I'd also research prices for their lenses; that is, if you plan to purchase anymore lenses instead of the standard 18-55mm kit lens(That comes with the camera).
Hope this helps!
