Buying my first Nikon Dslr?
Right now I have a canon powershot sx10… Which does not take detachable lenses and this camera is on its way out. I for sure will not buy another Canon product after this camera.
What I want to know is what should I look for in buying a digital slr? What about the lenses?
This is a big investment for me I want to do it right. I intend to use this camera alot! It will go everywhere with me.
Added (1). I'll be going to school for photography in the fall.
Added (2). Ps. I'm learning. Don't judge what you don't someone else because you have fancier equipment and more years on me. Pretentious photographers.haha that could be the stereotype with most i have met.
I don't understand. What happened with this Canon model you have to turn you off to this brand.
Of course it doesn't take lenses, it's a Power Shot. When you buy a cheap camera what did you expect, wonderful?
What do you know about dslr cameras? - not much it would seem. I'd suggest you get some formal training before spending your money. You may find out that, since you seem to be a snapper only and not really serious about photography, that you don't really want a dslr at $500 plus.
Bear in mind that DSLRs are big and bulky. Taking it everywhere will need some comittment - it won't fit in your pocket or purse like a P&S. Add lenses and a flash and you soon need a large bag just to carry your kit about.
The Nikon D3200 is a very good entry level DSLR. It will have an 18-55mm kit lens that will shock you with its limited zoom. You may want to add a 55-250 to get more reach but get used to the kit lens before spending more cash.
The body doesn't matter as much. A D3100 or D5100 will do just fine (preferably the D5100). What you want is a good quality kit lens(a lens that would be the most versatile in you're collection). Here are some of the Nikon kit lenses you should look at.
18-200 3.5-5.6 versatile, bit on the heavy side around $600-$700
18-300 3.5-5.6 versatile, huge, lots of barrel distortion on the wide end but you get a lot of telephoto. $1000
16-85 3.5-5.6 good wide angle, decent tele, very good image quality around $600
17-55 f2.8 its a pro grade lens, constant aperature, good bokeh(background blur) but no vr. $1500
18-55 3.5-5.6 it's the cheapest of them all, good starter lens
A DSLR is a LOT of camera for most people - WHY do you want one? You can get picture quality as good or better on a smaller, easy to carry model and some compacts have interchangeable lenses. I'm not trying to shoot down your choice but I carried a Film SLR and just three lenses and I can tell you it can be a real pain even if you are a real camera nut! (I was) Even pro photographers carry a compact digital camera for convenience on shoots as well as the DSLR. All that being said, go online and check various models and brands NIKON is one of the best but others are just as good depending on the model. Then check review sites for how the different models rate.
@ Jim A Hey, take it easy on the kid. We were all young and inexperienced at one time.
Hope This Helps.
Good-Luck!
Go to a local camera shop and try out the Rebel T3 & T3i and the Nikon D3100 & D5100.buy whichever one feels more comfortable to use.
Regardless of which camera you buy, you'll also need a genuine spare battery, 2 or 3 8GB Class 10 SDHC cards, a card reader and a case.
For now, just get an 18-55 kit lens.
