Help buying DSLR Camera for the first time?

My university course in Photography requires me to buy a DSLR camera so that I can understand the basics of Professional Photography. That being said I have no idea of what to buy and which DSLR to prefer and what exactly to look for when buying a DSLR. Most of my friends have went ahead and bought Nikon D5100 and a Nikkor 18-135mm lens.

My range is around 45000 INR~50000 INR (USD 1100) including the lens.

I don't mind buying second hand camera too since I don't think I will continue with photography as a profession, maybe as a hobby I won't mind.

The recommendations I got from people have other than the Nikon D5100 are

Olympus E-P2 ---> http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/EP2/EP2A.HTM
Canon D60 ---> http://www.dpreview.com/...noneosd60/
Canon EOS 550i -> http://www.dpreview.com/...onEOS550D/

I have read comments discussing Megapixels to sensor ratio and how lenses are more important than camera so that has only added to my confusion.

Btw Pentax Cameras are not available at my place so please don't bother recommending them. Also do tell the recommended lenses for each DSLR you have in mind.

Since the course has not yet begun I have little idea of the requirements or the type of photographs I will be clicking please suggest lenses for these 2 purposes

1.) Wide landscape photographs
2.) Fashion Photography

And can same lens be used for the two purposes?

1stly Nikkor don't have no 18-135mm lens… Canon got one…

2ndly D5100 Nikon is cool… But since you'r budget is 50, 000/- try 53000/- and get a Nikon D90…

Canon 60D is also Nice…

Don't buy Canon 550D or any Pentax camera…

@ … ZZZ…

You need to go back to source - and ask the Course Tutors for more specific descriptions than "a DSLR camera". Since they will be setting and monitoring the course they should know precisely which camera will meet their requirements; if they can't / won't do this then I should question the experience and knowledge of the lecturers - if not the quality of the course.
