The 50mm f/1.8 is inexpensive and readily available. It is a short telephoto length on a crop sensor, a good length for portraits. There's also the 50mm f/1.4, it costs a little more and has a better build.

50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.4. Both are expensive but really good.
