Best Nikon lens for low light situations to use with D5100?

Hi all I was wondering about the best Nikon lens for a D5100. I heard some older lenses do not work with the auto focus on newer Nikons. Any help towards advice for the best lens to use with this camera or also an all around lens including low light motion shoots would be great. I was thinking about just getting the body instead of with the stock lens and purchasing either a new lens or second hand one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Any AF-S lens will be 100% compatible and autofocus.
What sort of lens are you after? Zoom or prime? Wide angle, standard, telephoto or macro/micro?
What sort of budget do you have?
What is the lens going to be mainly used to photograph?

Any Nikkor AF-S lens that has an aperture of f/2.8 or better is a fine lens for the D5100

Here is a sample shot using a 300 mm f/2.8 in rather low lighting

Here is a link to all the Nikkor lenses available at this time

I do a lot of low and available light photography with my Canon dslr cameras using the Canon
50mm f/1.8. Nikon has the same lens and I highly recommend it.

You don't get everything you want in life. Almost always, you compromise.

Your best bet is to learn photography. That way, camera and lens limitations won't bog you down.

Either that or contend yourself with this.

Henri Cartier Bresson created his lifes work with a 50mm lens. The auto focus nikon 50mm 1.8 should get you started for about $100
