Best Digital Camera for high School Student?

I'm a senior in high school right now and I need a new camera for my senior activities like senior ball and gradnite. I'm thinking about sony, canon, or nikon. Which are the best models? Should i get a dslr, sony micro four-thirds, or just a point and shoot? I'm willing to spend up to $600.

SLR will have the best quality, but for your price range, you won't get a really good one, they're also big and bulky.
A good Cannon P&S will do the job. I believe Cannon is one of highest rated Camera manufacturers in the market.

Don't over think this. Keep it simple, silly. You want something that will fit inside a jacket pocket, something durable, and takes good pictures with minimal tweaking. Aim for $100 or less and put the other $500 into your college savings or what have you.
Get a nicer camera when you start taking photography classes or start making money selling your prints.
