I'm a complete amateur when it comes to cameras, really, i have no idea lol, but regardless i'm extremely keen to learn, i'm interested in purchasing either a canon or nikon slr/dslr for under a $1000, i'll be using it to shoot young children & infants both inside & outside, but am confused as to whether this type of camera most suited for my desired purpose, taking it to account it's functions, lens etc? As you can already tell by my lack of lingo & blatant lack of knowledge on this subject that i have alot to learn lol, so i'm asking anyone with suggestions as to what camera is best, and if there are any downfalls, things to look for/out for. Also if anyone has any experience in shooting infants, do you have any creative suggestions as to what backdriop works best with what lighting etc. And of any interesting themes, prop ideas.

I'll tell you what you need and that's a short course in photography. Trust me you aren't going to get the answers here. A college level course would help. A short course in properly operating a dslr would help. Watching and studying portrait photography would help.

Another thing, if you watch any concert and just pay attention to the keyboard player. That person didn't start playing last night - he / she has invested their life in the keyboard. It's the same way with professional photographers.

Regarding contributor "Jim A." All I can add is "amen"! I have spent 45 yrs in photography, mainly with the negatives, color and black & white. Digital has entered my retirement years of which I have about 15 yrs under my belt. However, in addition to answering questions, I have spent a good deal of time reading other answers and have picked up a wealth of information. Learning in photography is a continuing process. For you to go out and spend $1000 on your first camera, I think is nut's! I always make fun of people who think they can get great pictures with the cheapest camera made, and conversely spending $1000.00 will be doing yourself a tremendous disservice. Your title sentence assistance required urgently, wow that is a tall order you have set for yourself. Start lower, perhaps a "bridge" camera and upgrade your camera as you learn.

The dSLR is the best camera for your needs especially when catching the moment but the real challenge here is knowing how to use it properly. You'll have to learn the basic principles of photography. Here, start now.
