Are Nikon the only manufacturer that charges extra for a guarantee in the UK?
If I buy a FIAT, Ford, VW, Mercedes, Renault, abroad the warranty is included in the price for the UK.
Buy a Nikon camera and it isn't unless I have paid the over inflated UK price for it, same product, same factory, same model, it has no warranty in the UK!
Is it because they now manufacture in China?
You will only get a guarantee if you buy a camera (any camera) from a UK dealer. If you import one from abroad it'll be a grey market camera, the guarantee is only valid in the country it was sold in.
It's the same in any country and with most camera manufacturers. The "over inflated" UK price is because of the VAT we pay. It's 20%. You can blame the bloody government for that. The Tory/Lib Dem coalition are the ones who increased VAT to 20%, to pay off the mess left by the previous Labour government. The only people ripping us off are our bloody politicians, and the banks, who took all our money, given to them by our politicians.
BTW if you do import a camera from abroad… Get ready for the VAT bill that will land on your doorstep, because cameras purchased abroad are not exempt.
Buy from http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/ - they are giving their 3 years warranty on grey import. I'm about to order EOS 70D 18-135 from them and it is £800 compared to £1000 from Currys
No, Canon, Pentax, Fujifilm, Olympus, etc. All do the same. They have to play by the rules your elected officials have set. Don't like the rules, change officials. Doesn't do us much good in the USA, but maybe it will for you.
Nikon has a one-year standard factory warranty which is supported by all official distributors and authorized resellers. Some stores sell extended warranty which is practically a scam. I highly advise that you buy from a reputable store. If the price is too good to be true, avoid like the plague. That's a gray market product that is not covered by warranty anywhere in the kingdom, even if you pay for it.
In UK if the Nikon is bought from a UK shop the guarantee is with the seller for a year, then it becomes the responsibility of Nikon UK. Bought from outside the UK. There's no warranty or guarantee. You must send it back to Nikon in the country from which it was bought. It is wrong to charge for a warranty or guarantee that is statuary in UK.
