Are Canon cameras better than Nikon?

I was planning on getting a new camera and I'm not really sure which is better. I see the commercials for Nikon and it makes it look so much nicer than my Canon Powershot, but you really can't trust commercials. Give me your opinion?

Added (1). And by better I mean like… Quality wise and this new Nikon camera you can take pictures without flash in dark lighting, is that any good?

Not sure, but the camera you have at the moment breaks the picture.

Well, if you wanna go pro in photography nikon is better. But if its just for taking pictures for you and your family and stuff, canon is the best.

Nikon and Canon are pretty much the same, quality wise.

coupled with a fast lens, taking pictures in dark places is EASIER, but still very hard to do

choose whatever feels better to you

Both are equal. Both are the top companies. And despite what some say near as many pros use canon as they do nikon. Both have an exceptional lens selection and both have a clear upgrade path from beginner all the way to pro. Be side of this path these are the two main companies to look at. From here its just based on personal preference

Depends on how much you'd pay.

Keeping Nikon and Canon in their respective price ranges, either one is no better than the other.
I could easily say Nikon because I'm a Nikon guy; but it would not be true. A $1200 Nikon camera (without lens); a Canon $1200 camera would be equal in quality and features. Same goes for any price range for these two companies when it comes to DSLRS. Handle a camera say from Best Buy, see which feels better in your hands. Check each camera's menu. See which is easier for you to get what you want from each one's menu.

It comes down to personal preference. My preference is Nikon, but which is best is up to you.
