Why they call sd cards memory sticks?

I bought a Nikon camera off a guy & he said Id need to buy a memory stick for it. I did this but then found I actually needed an SD card! Apparently Memory Stick cards only fit Sony cameras!
I've now found lots of people seem to make this mistake! Why don't they use the correct terminology?

Because they hold data. And store it just like people store memoriesā€¦ And it's a stickā€¦

It's just one of those things, people use, 'Card,' and, 'Stick,' interchangeably. And yes, Sony's, 'Memory sticks,' are unique (they're also expensive and hard to find, so it's worth trying to recoup some of your loss by selling it on).

While inaccurate and misleading, there isn't much you can do about it, although if you'd taken the camera along to a dealer, he would've sold you the correct type as soon as he saw the slot.

The manual is also invaluable here - if you don't have a paper copy, download one (free) from Nikon and read it thoroughly (you'll need a.pdf reader like Adobe Acrobat, but that's also free to download).

In future ALWAYS take your camera when buying accessories - if you aren't sure what you need, any dealer worthy of the name can fill in the blanks once he sees the camera.

SD cards or Secure Digital cards are generically called memory cards. So, yeah he did make a mistake because Memory Sticks work only with Sony cameras, the PS3, the PSP, and card readers. Sometimes people don't know the difference.

People also call memory cards a sim card. That is not correct, or misspell canon, (cannon) or lens (lence) or call it filming when it's recording. The list is endless.

They are called memory cards. Sony started the whole "memory stick" thing back when they were trying to force everyone to use their memory cards.

Check out this link it shows you that Sony literally used the term "memory stick".

Sony patented the name Memory Stick, and like Band Aid it came to be not only a proper noun but a noun as well. Technically, only Sony makes Memory Sticks, and everybody else sells USB storage drives or SD cards. Technical terminology changes rapidly, and it is best to double check the specifics of what you need with your user manual first. But if you are anything like me it will just sound like confusing techno-speak. I usually search either Amazon.com Cnet.com or TermWiki.com to find good pictures and definitions before buying technology.

Because they are idiots & don't know what they are talking about! Like you found out Memory Stick is a storage device ONLY used by Sony Co & no one else! An SD card also is a storage device as are XD cards, MMS cards & USB Flash drives but all are physically different!
It a bit like calling every Tablet computer an Ipad!
