A good camera for beginner?

I need to get a camera with manuel settings and lenses for a photography class.were learning how to use it and all in class but i was wondering which brand camera and type would be good for a beginner? I was thinking cannon or nikon.price range preferably $400-$600.thanks(:
Added (1). I really do love taking pictures but never used anything except for a digital camera or my iphone.

Alright, the Canon t3 falls right into your budget at $550.It's a fully adjustable dslr that would probably be perfect for your class.

Nikon D3100, but would encourage you to go with the D5100. Great starter DSLR for fun shooting but gives you Manual options for just starting out.
