Neither - it's like the Pepsi/Coke debate. Some people prefer one, some the other.

If you are considering buying, then try out both, with models at a similar price point & see which feels best for YOU.

Neither! They are both top quality. You should also include Pentax in that group. These are the 3 top manufacturers (skip Sony) in DSLR cameras.

TOP QUALITY from a shooting stand point.
1. Never use the camera's "delete" button (why? Leaves fragments from previous picture behind)!
2. Always set camera for maximum pixel quality. You do not have to pay to develop all the shots you take. You can edit (delete the bad ones) from your computer after uploading the picture files.

Which is the better brand?
Viewfinder comfort is the MOST important thing!
Location of controls 2nd most important.
Lenses and possible lenses you may want in the future. Remember the 18-55mm is not good for close-ups or bringing distance scenery in close or including (wide angle) all the area.

Neither could really be considered better. I personally shoot with a Canon because I'm more comfortable with the video capabilities and I've always worked with canons so I'm comfortable with the layout on the body.

However you need to keep in mind that it is a tool. It's job is to help you take pictures. Just like any other tool you need to look at the qualities it has vs.cost and determine what you would like more.

Nikon vs Canon is like comparing two brands of any tool. Find what fits your hand better and go for it

Nikon - look at the various test reports.

Yet again!

I prefer Pentax, some swear by Sony and many won't be parted from Olympus.

All DSLRs are virtually the same, but Canon and Nikon shout loudly enough that idiots can hear them. There are many stupid people walking around with entry-level DSLRs from both, who assumed that these things would magically turn them into photographers - every day they ask questions on YA that prove their stupidity.

Canon for handling. Nikon for low light.
But I'm more than happy with my Sony A57.

Between these two, the Nikon usually has the better image sensor (if you skip the 24 megapixel crop sensors).

Pentax gives you a better sensor and body like the K 30 or K5II.

Sony alpha is better if you plan on shooting a lot of video. The A57 and A58 are probably the best bang for the buck.
