I took my Nikon dSLR to the Caribbean for nine and a half weeks during hurricane season. No worries.

I have to say that the camera I took had environmental seals to keep moisture and dust from getting inside. All my lenses were other than entry level ($300 or less) lenses.

I took a 12-24 mm, 70-85 mm and a 70-300 mm lens (the $600 one)

That was in 2006 and those lenses and camera are still working just fine.

If you want to be super safe, you can use some kind of absorbent material like silica gel in your camera bag

I go to the Caribbean all the time with my D90.

The only issue is when you go from an air-conditioned area to the outside, you should let the camera temperature stabilize for 15 minutes before taking photos.

To do that, simply keep the lens cap on, and if the camera is in a bag, open the top of the bag so the ambient air can get in.

Then you can take the camera out and start shooting.

If you don't do this, when you remove the lens cap, your lens may fog up.

Otherwise, no issues.
