Which is best?

These two cameras are completely different propositions. If you want a camera that you can use almost out of the box and will not have any major further outlays then go for the Canon SX40HS. The Nikon D5200 on the other hand will allow you use a variety or really great lenses and other associated equipment, giving the possibility of far greater creativity, albeit at a higher eventual expense.

The only thing I can tell you is you are not ready for a dSLR!

Should you buy a DSLR or a Compact?

You need to do the reading and decide for yourself, which one is best for you

If you can't work out;

a) A DSLR will blow any bridge camera out of the water.

b) The Pentax K-30 is widely believed to be the best in its class (it costs the same as the D5200 but out-performs the D7000).

c) Fujifilm match the SX40 at a lower price.

You should stick to paper and crayons.

Whether you should go for a DSLR or a bridge camera is a question only you can answer, but you'll need to do a lot more research first.

The question being which is best then the answer has to be the Nikon D5200.

The D5200 is a totally different beast from the Canon.

The D5200 is a DSLR while the Canon is a bridge camera. Bridge cameras look like DSLR cameras but are not really the same at all. The Nikon can change lenses and has more features but the Canon is lighter and more compact.

For many reasons a DSLR will always beat out a bridge camera all day long.
