Nikkor 50mm f1.8 or 16-85?

I have a D5200 and i'm going to be doing portraits. I really like zoom lenses, but i have heard that upgrading from my kit lens(18-55) to 16-85 isn't going to give me MUCH sharper images. So, is the 50mm f1.8 really that sharp? If so, What zoom lens would be as sharp as this prime?

Ratio price/quality the 50mm f/1, 8G is a better choice.

However the lens won't be as versatile because it's a fix focal lens, you'll need to use your legs allot.

You've been asking allot of question about different lens lately, almost like you want to spend money for the simple pleasure of spending money. Maybe you should consider using your kit lens longer, gaining more experience until you figure out what you really need.

For portraits with your D5200 the AF-S 50mm f1.8G is the go-to lens. If your budget allows the AF-S 50mm f1.4G would be slightly better. About the only zoom lens that comes to mind would be the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f2.8G IF ED but here in the USA its about $1, 540.00.
