The first thing you need to do is talk to the instructor.

Which fully adjustable camera you need to buy will depend upon the requirements of each class

Many beginning photo classes start with learning how to use a 35 mm camera, developing film and printing the best of the best images from each roll of film. Those cameras are found used and cost from $100 to $150 with a standard lens.

As you advance through the schools photo classes, you will have an opportunity to use digital cameras, so it may be important to buy a 35 mm SLR which uses the same lenses as the eventual digital SLR camera you buy does.

I used a Nikon F4s in some of the advanced classes I took a few years ago, honing my skills as a black and white printer. All my Nikkor AF and AF-S lenses used on my F4s worked perfectly well on my Nikon D100, D200, D300 and D800e as they will on my new D500 which I should have by the end of summer.

Using a single brand of camera saves you money in the end. Hopping from one brand to another is almost as costly as a divorce if you have a good stable of lenses.

Talk to your instructor and see if you need a 35 mm film camera or a digital SLR. The least expensive digital SLR sells for around $450 with a standard lens. You can find used digital SLR cameras on KEH.com if you later find you want to take any digital photography classes I would contact the instructor for recommendations. It depends on what kind of shooting you will do. Best to ask the class instructor. But almost certainly a DSLR would be a good choice. I hope that the course is not one of those old-fashioned courses which insist on spending a lot of time using film. Even 10 years ago I was surprised to come across a course insisting on the use of film.

Note that I'm 69 years old. I started in 1960 with film, of course, but by 2003 was glad to convert to digital. Ask the teacher. They have different requirements.
