There are NO very low priced dSLR's unless you consider $700 low priced.

Look at the Nikon D3200 and Canon 650D/T4i

I think most of the cheaper DSLRs from the good brands will be fine for what you want. They usually have a nice blend of automatic and manual settings, meaning you can let the camera decide sometimes, but get into adjusting things if you want to get more involved.

Something like the Canon EOS 1100D is a good starter camera. It can be got for about $450 (in Australia), which is super cheap for a DSLR. Canons are really well designed and easy to use, they take great shots too. If you can afford to spend more, the EOS 550D or EOS 60D are well worth it.

I don't know heaps about other brands. But anything from Nikon, Olympus, Sony or Pentax is likely going to be a great camera. Maybe read some reviews and try some out in a store if you can.

EDIT: For $850 the best options are probably the Canon 60D or 600D or a Nikon D3200. You should be able to get a reasonably nice single lens kit for that much if you look around.

DSLRs are basically the same, but I suppose someone who doesn't know the difference between, 'Than,' and, 'Then,' wouldn't know that.

Once you've sorted out your vocabulary, find a dealer and handle a couple of likely candidates, picking the one you like. That's all there's to it.

Your afford limit is not bad. For the beginner i like to suggest you to take canon 1000d, EOS 550d or you can choose 1100d. I think this camera gives good service and you can easily get one of them by your limited budget. I don't have enough knowledge about Nikon, Sony, Olympus etc.

U r going to cost a high amount of money for Dslr's. I recommend you to go for the Nikon.

A Sony NEX 6(Body only) is a perfect camera for beginners and costs approximately 830$.It's really light, has a good sensor, built in Wi-Fi, camera apps and a really good lens ecosystem that doesn't cost that much.

You can also take a look at the NEX 5R.

You can get a Canon EOS T2i, T3i or Nikon D3100 and D5100. All of these are excellent and will allow you to take great pictures as long as you will read the manual and practice. Personally I think the D5100 is the best for the price/performance.
