Hi there i'm looking for ideas on what camera to buy. I had a nikon d5100 a first as a gift but i didn't like it because it didn't take all lenses. I had it for a few years though. Now i have had a d200 for about a year. I'm enjoying it and will keep it as a back up most likely or as a main. Maybe just buy a new lens. I'm only using a tokina one now. I only do photos as a hobbie butit is something i wold like to get into more one day. I shoot portraits. I'm looking for a lens at a cheap second hand price. No more then $250. As i'm a single stay at home mum lol i've been looking at one for a while i think its 1/1.8 50mm. It was something like that sorry if thats no help i don't have the name in my head right now.

First answer is nonsense for your requirements.

As a portrait lens a fast 50mm would be very suitable, but opinions might say that the f1, 4 is better than the f1.8. Or go for a 60mm macro lens at f2.8 - good for portraits (still lots of 'bokeh') and for very close-up work - Tokina should be good.

Good portrait lenses are the 50mm f1.8 (or f1.4 if you can afford it) or the 85mm f1.8 (or again f1.4 if you can stretch your budget).

These are my favourite portrait lenses.

A macro lens is also a possibility as they have dual uses - good for portraits, though at f2.8 not quite as fast as the primes listed above. A 50mm, 60mm or even a 105mm macro (need room to backup on that one!) are all fine. I use a Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro for portraits a fair bit.

You had a D5100 but dumped it because it didn't AF with all lenses and now you have a D200 but just use a single lens? Haha!

You already have a camera. Just buy more lenses. The 50mm f/1.8 is cheap but do you need it? If you can shoot 90% of your shots comfortably with your existing lens, you don't need a new lens yet.
