What lenses fit the nikon D4?

Matt Brennan

I'm getting a nikon D4 but i have no idea what type of lenses their are. I'm not sure if it's the same as canon like some cameras will fit EF but not EF-S lenses. What are the restrictions i any with the D4

Added (1). I used large zoom lenses on my canon like 400mm and 500mm etc. So preferably a nikon lens like that. It could also be a sigma lens with nikon fit

Added (2). I know what lens i want i just want to know if every nikon lens fits every nikon camera

Added (3). Andrew: i don't care about cropped lenses thats good for the long shots i need with wildlife! I would like a full frame body for landscape shots though, i don't expect it to turn me into a photographer considering i already am one. I just need to know DO All NIKON LENSES FIT All NIKON CAMERAS?

Now you know why I call them, 'The Idiots' Two.'

If you're even thinking of buying a D4, you should know that their cropped-sensor lenses produce a cropped-sensor image on full-frame bodies.

It's nothing to worry about, though. You'll be on here in a couple of months trying to flog the thing because it didn't magically turn you into a photographer.

Additional;

You've used Canon, but you're switching to Nikon? I rest my case.

ANY of the Nikkor lenses

If you have a DX lens, the D4 will automatically crop the sensor for you. The best of both worlds. Cropped sensor for shooting wildlife and full size sensor for shooting wide angle landscapes and studio work.

Even the manual focus lenses can be used with the D4

I have Nikkor AI lenses that I use with my D3. Your D4 can do the same

Yes all Nikon AF lens will fit the D4 even the older manual focus AI, AI-S will fit and meter ( no auto focusing though) with the D4.

If you don't already know the answer to lens choice, you are probably not ready for a D4.

But since you asked, you need the "Holy Trinity" to start:

Nikon AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8
Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8

And you can supplement these lenses as you get a better idea of what you want.

--- Update ---

Basically, any modern Nikon DSLR can use all Nikon lenses except for the IX Nikkor (1990's era APS film SLRs) lenses, and F3AF (auto focus experiment with F3) lenses. It can even use DX lenses, but the camera will auto-shift to DX mode when doing so.

When using certain lenses, some NIkon DSLRs may not have full functionality - for instance, entry level Nikon DSLRS (D3xxx and D5xxx) will not autofocus on AF lenses. But otherwise the lenses will mount, meter, and work even on those cameras. Those lenses just have to be manually focused on the entry level DSLRs.
