I have a DSLR and I want to get out to do a couple rain shots or people in the rain and stuff like that. Any ideas on how to make something to make it waterproof or something like that? I have a nikon d3200 I got recently.

The allure of being able to photograph underwater subjects is undeniable; using a digital camera underwater, though, can be tricky. These units are full of sensitive electronics that will stop functioning properly if care isn't taken to ensure they are completely protected. To waterproof a DSLR camera, an external waterproof housing must be used around the camera body.

1. Consult a fitting guide (see Resources for an example) to see what type of case your DSLR will need. The housing must also take into account the size lens you plan to use, as the lens must also be protected from water.

2. Examine the depth to which the camera housing will function. Less expensive housings may not be guaranteed for deep dives, so you will need to compare the depths and make sure the housing you are choosing is suitable before purchase.

3. Check your purchased underwater housing for leaks. Seal the housing without a camera and place it in a pool or bathtub, then observe. Air bubbles and droplets inside the housing may indicate a leak that needs to be addressed before your camera equipment is trusted to the housing.

4. Seat the camera inside the clean, dry camera housing and seal. This will vary based on the type of camera, type of housing and the manufacturer. Remember to check all "O" rings and seals before submerging the equipment.

You don't need a waterproof case, you need a rain guard. Here is a selection of them in a variety of prices:

If you want something a little more rugged, in case you get splashed or want to take it in the surf or pool, you can get something like this:

If you want to really go waterproof, you buy a housing:

You can use an Ikelite housing. They are completely waterproof, but at $1, 500 and up they are spendy.

Another option is something like a Ewa Marine bag. They run around $350.

Lastly, you can just use a rain cape. They are around $20.

Or you could get a weatherproofed Pentax like the K30, and use it with a WR lens. You can't exactly use it underwater, but it is effectively weather-sealed against rain.
