Want a new lens for my nikon d3200?

I want to buy the 50mm 1.4 but it's a bit expensive. The 50mm 1.8 is much cheaper and I was wondering if It was worth it to get the 1.4? Used I can get the 1.4 for 280 dollars. The 1.8 new is about 100 I believe. If you need any more info just ask

Be careful, the used 50mm f/1.4 may be a AF-D version, which won't focus on your camera. I have seen used AF-D f/1.4s in the $280 range, but not the AF-G versions - they are closer to $400 even used.

I have the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G only because I always wanted a f/1.4 lens. However, the f/1.8G lens is so highly rated that you may strongly wish to consider that lens. In fact, the f/1.8G lens is a bit better wide open at f/1.8 than the f/1.4G lens is at f/1.4. Part of this is just the nature of wide open lenses.

If you can afford the f/1.4G ($460), go for it, but don't hesitate to get the f/1.8G ($220) if you want to save a few dollars. Again, you need the AF-S (G) model to focus on your camera. The $120 50mm f/1.8 AF-D is a great lens, but it will not autofocus on your camera.

In fact, I highly recommend Nikon's f/1.8 trio; the 28mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 85mm f/1.8 - even on a cropped camera. I have this combo (except my 50mm is the f/1.4), and they are very sharp lenses. Also, if you ever desire to go to full frame, these three lenses will give you a good start.

I'd go for the 1.8.

The only lens Nikon sells that's $125 is the 50MM 1.8D. Its a great lens to BTW. But on your entry level body it won't auto focus. You need a body with a built in auto focus motor such as a D90, D7000 or D7100 and higher.

Your D3200 will auto focus with ANY Nikon AF-S lens.

I'd look into the 50mm 1.8G. Its and AF-S lens. It sells for $220 new. Its built better then the older 50mm 1.8D.
