Tamron are OK, Sigma are better - just make sure any lens you buy is in Nikon mount and has a motor.

Branded lenses are costlier, but you may opt for tamron for cheaper price with same performance of nikkor lenses too.

With the D3100, you will need a lens with a built in auto focus motor. Tamron's designation for this is USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), Nikon uses AF-S (You will also see SWM, but it means the same thing), & Sigma uses HSM. I'm not sure what Tokina uses, but they make some good lenses also. If it's not an internal drive lens, it will not auto focus on your camera. The good news is that just about all modern lenses are now built this way. Just be careful if you are planning to buy used. Tamron makes a good third party lens, but just like all lens makes, some rate higher than others. I have actually seen a few Tamron lenses that I prefer over equivalent Nikon lenses, and at a lower cost. When you find a lens you're interested in, go to several photography web sites, and read reviews. This will give you a good consensus from people who have actually used the lens.

Your camera does not have an AF motor so it will only autofocus Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses. For third-party brands, check the equivalent model designation. Decent stores mention AF compatibility with entry-level Nikon models. If the lens is stated to have it's own motor, that should do.
