The D7000 is a great camera, and now at a good price point, since the D7100 is out. I just got a used D7000 before the price break (sigh), and now use it as my go-to camera.

As far as not getting a new body for 7-9 years, that's all up to you. Today, there are many photographers happily using older D40, D50, & D70 cameras from 2004 and 2006. Though these cameras don't have the Liveview, video capablilities, and resolution of more modern cameras, they can produce excellent results with the right lenses and techniques.

Hey, how many people are enjoying their cars from 5, 10, or more years ago?

The best thing about the D7000 is how it is obsolesce-proof. It can use AF-S, AF, and any Nikon lens made since 1977. The dual SD memory slots open all kinds of possibilities for media storage, and the magnesium chassis give it a solid feel and provides confidence in the field.

Here's a couple of reviews for you.

I think you are on the right track to keep your camera for awhile and spend your money on lenses. I just upgraded to a D7100 (used to own a D90), but only after upgrading all of my lenses. I bought lenses rather than a D7000. Consequently, eight of the 11 lenses I own are f/2.8 or faster.

Afterall you get more bang for the buck with lenses than you do a camera. And lenses do not depreciate or become obsolete like a camera. No sense going with a higher end camera until you have the lenses - otherwise you will not realize the full potential of your camera.
