Which one is better? Pros and cons?

CAPTAIN GENIUS !!
CAPTAIN GENIUS !!

Well scratch the D5000 off your list. Its image sensor isn't as good as the D3100 and D5100's. Also the articulating screen on the D5000 gets in the way if you try and move the screen on a tripod.

The D5100 would be the best out of all three since it has the best image sensor out of the bunch. It performs very well at high ISO settings. Also the D5100's monitor has the highest resolution which means you'll get a better idea of how the image looks.

The D3100 is good because its a true entry level DSLR in that its really easy to use while also offering allot of control. Its image sensor is better then the D5000's but not as good as the D5100's. The D3100 also has the advantage of being the lightest out of the bunch. With the kit lens attached it still feels like it weighs nothing.

In terms of video the D3100 and D5100 are both tied. They both have great detail but the D3100 is limited to adjusting the aperture while the D5100 can allow you to adjust both ISO and aperture in video mode. Also the D5100 has an input for a Stereo mic were as the D3100 and D5000 don't. On a side note to adjust aperture and ISO in video mode you must first exit live view, make your changes and then go back into live view.

So the D5000 is old. You can pick one up used. But the D3100 is better in every way.

The D3100 is a great DSLR to start off with. I own one and really like it. Its battery life is also better then the D5000's.

The D5100 is a higher end entry level DSLR. It just has more bells a whistles. But offers better high ISO performance.

All three cameras are very responsive which means they are all ready to take pictures before you are.

I would go with Nikon D5100.

It has higher rating and more good reviews by people. Also, you can buy refurbished one for cheaper price.

The D3100 one isn't really DSLR. So i don't recommend it.
