Nikon Camera Lenses - can they be used on different models?

Does any one one know if a Nikon D3200 and a Nikon D90 have the capacity to share the same lenses? I have a D90, but am about to buy the D3200 and am just wondering if I can use my D90 lenses on the D3200. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Generally, yes, but there are exceptions.

The D3000/D5000 series won't meter with MF lenses, and won't autofocus with AF ones (AF lenses require a body motor they don't have).

Pre-AI (very old) lenses have to be modified to AI standard to fit autofocus bodies.

Your D90 lenses will fit - and meter with - the D3200, but they won't autofocus.

The D90 can use all lenses that the D3200 can use.

The D3200 also can use all lenses that the D90 can use, but only those that have an autofocus motor in the lens will autofocus. Nikon calls these lenses AF-S (not to be confused with merely AF).

The D3200 requires use of Nikon's more expensive AF-S lenses for auto focus. If the lenses you have for your D90 are AF lenses they can be used on the D3200 but only with manual focus. The Nikon D7000 can use the AF lenses and have auto focus just like your D90.

If your lenses are AF-S they will autofocus with the D3200.
