How to do light graffiti with Nikon D3000?
I tried to do it but it didn't work.
I set my shutter on 1/10 and put my camera on timer but it didn't work
My aperture was 200
I don't know what I'm doing wrong?
Someone tell me step by step how to do it please
1/10th second is not enough time to do very much. Using M mode you can set the exposure time to up to 30 seconds. There's no aperture of 200. There's an ISO of 200. At ISO 200 you would want a pretty low f number for your light to show up. You might have to turn up the ISO more. With this kind of long exposure you need to be in pretty dark darkness. About 30 seconds at f3.5 at ISO 400 is about the right exposure to make direct moonlight under a clear sky and full moon look like daylight. It is not enough light for your autofocus to work. If you pick out the spot where you will be standing, you can take your camera to that spot, and use a flashlight to help you lock the focus on your tripod. Then switch from auto to manual focus without disturbing the focus adjustment. Don't change the zoom. Carefully place the camera back on the tripod. This is made easier if the tripod uses a quick release plate.
Aperture 200? No such aperture. What you're doing wrong is not knowing how to properly operate your camera or lens.
What's your lighting condition… Night? If it's day light just snap a picture but night photography is different as you're finding out.
1/10 shutter isn't long enough if it's at night.
First use a tripod. Set your ISO to 100 or 200. For the sharpest photos I'd recommend you set your shutter at f/10 in aperture priority and let the camera decide the shutter speed. At night it'll be kind of long, perhaps as much as 10-seconds.
For focus carry a small flash light to light the area and catch your auto focus. Then use your camera's 10-second timer to avoid blur when you press the shutter release and fire. Do several one after the other and you'll get there.
Here is how you create light graffiti
* find a nice dark place
* set up your camera on a tripod
* attache a remote shutter release
* manually focus the lens where you intend to write your graffiti
* set your ISO to 200
* pick an aperture of about f/8 or f/11
* Set your cameras shutter speed to bulb
* lock the shutter open using your remote shutter release
* go to the place you have prefocused and using your light source(s) do your thing
* when you get back to the camera, close the shutter
* view the results on your cameras LCD and based upon the exposure you see (under or overexposure) adjust the lenses aperture to provide a higher colour saturation
* follow the above steps to make all the graffiti you want
As you can see, your method of "try and fail" did not get the results you wanted.
* shutter speed of 1/10 second is far too fast
* lens apertures are from f/1.4 to f/32 maximum range (no f/200)
You need 20 seconds or more for your shutter speed, depending on how fast you are.
Search on YouTube for step-by-step instructions on how to photograph fireworks, which is not all that different technique-wise than you are trying to do.
You will be using manual focus, manual exposure, and a tripod.
The only real difference is the shutter speed may be different. Try 20, 40, or 60 seconds, and see how that works. You can also use bulb mode if you have a ML-L3 remote.
