I'm looking to get into star trails, and I'm just getting into DSLR photography. Please try not to dump cosmic panda guts on me.

The exact procedure is slightly different on each model DSLR.

You will have to change the top dial to either "S" (shutter speed) or "M" (manual), then one of the other dials changes the shutter speed.

It is just as easy for you to look in your manual than me to have to download a manual and find it for you.

Read your manual or else download a copy from nikon.

Do you still have the Owners Manual? The Owners Manual covers so much basic information about the camera operations including on how to change the shutter speed. If you don't have the Owners Manual you can easily download the PDF copy of the Owners Manual from the Nikon Website.

Hint: look on pages 77 and 78 of the Owners Manual
