How to change the shutter speed of a Nikon D3100?
I recently moved and I'm not sure where my D3100 manual is. I've been searching for awhile and I can't seem to figure how to change the shutter speed. I know I have to use the spinny thing at the top and switch it to S but thats as far as I get. I'm still not sure how to change it so that its slower or faster.
Download a pdf version of the manual from Nikon's home site.
The "spiny thing" is your mode dial. Once set to S (shutter speed priority), just roll the dial on the back of the camera until you see the shutter speed of your choice in the viewfinder or lcd display.
BTW, here's a place to download the manual.

And here's a nice user's guide I recommend you also download and print off for reference.
