I want to buy a DSLR camera and I can't choose between the canon rebels(if so which one) or the Nikon(I was thinking either the d3100, d5100, or any other suggestions. I want to be able to take great photos as well as video. Please suggest others if you know of any good ones.

Added (1). Also my price range goes anywhere up to about $500-600

Added (2). Whoops! Haha. I thought my spelling looked wrong.

Well a cannon is out since they shoot cannon balls.

Read the professional reviews of the Nikon D3100, D5100 and Canon T3i/600D on DP Review and DXO Mark websites.

Then visit the Nikon and Canon websites to see all the accessories and lenses that are available for each system

After you have compared them on those sites, visit a proper camera shop and hold them each in your hands to see which you like the best

Nikon is always better than canon, though cannon is better than anything else around

If this is your first or second DSLR, then I'd recommend a Cannon. The menus, user interface on the Canons are much more intuitive & easier to learn and use. The Nikon menus are very quirky and will drive you nuts if you're new to DSLR!

If you can afford it, I'd go with a Canon T5i; I use one myself. Good camera, the touch screen is the cat's meow. If you can't afford the T5i, then go for the T4i. It's the older version of the T5i and is just as good really, but cheaper.

If your camera comes with that 18-55mm kit lens, sell that piece of junk and buy the 40mm STM "pan cake lens". That thing is so small & light you'd think your camera doesn't have a len on it. Must have lens, that 40mm.

I'd take Pentax over either, and Sony do better video.

The only way is to find a dealer and handle All the options within your price range and choose the one you like.

None of them will magically transform you into a photographer (that takes a minimum 18 months of hard work) and the world won't end if you make the wrong choice - but I wouldn't expect someone who only knows two manufacturers and can't spell one of them to know that.

Then again, you have to be Really stupid to ask the commonest, most irritating question on YA in the first place.

Of the two DSLR major brands, both Nikon and Canon are essentially equal in terms of picture quality, lens quality and availability, and function. Don't let somebody tell you that A is definitively better than B because of something they happen to like better. The best idea would be for you to try each out. See how they fit in your hands, see how you relate to the menu layout and the controls. Maybe even rent or borrow one of each for a day and test them for an extended period.

Pentax and Sony (used to be Minolta) also make good cameras, but there's a reason Nikon and Canon are the top two (lenses).

Also remember that when you buy a brand, you're pretty much signing up with that brand for your camera career. Once you get an investment in good lenses, you'll upgrade your body to use those lenses. And lenses are NOT transferable between brands. You'll be using that brand line forever (unless you decide to dump the whole thing and start over). So, pick a good one.
