D7000 Focus Problem?

Just grabbed a Nikon D7000 a few days ago and didn't really use it until I grabbed a new lens (85MM 1.8 afs) quality is great. However I ALWAYS have to manually focus, its as if the AF doesn't work. I tried switching the dial that says "AF M" and holding the button in to switch to AF-Single, but everytime I hold the button down, no options come up. I hold it and don't see any options anywhere to switch between AF-S, AF-A or AF-C.

I take it you have followed the instructions on page 300 of your user manual?

With the on-lens switch, keep it set to M/A mode. On the camera make sure that the focus mode is set to AF.

In this setup, you should find that the lens will auto-focus on the focusing point you have chosen when you either press the shutter release button halfway down or when you press and hold the AF/L button with you thumb after assigning it the auto-focus mode, page 97

If after doing the above, the lens still does not focus, try one of your other lenses. The results will tell you if there's something wrong with the auto-focus motor on the lens or if the camera is at fault.

NOTE: Holding the button down will focus the lens, but NO option will show up on your screen.

Have the camera checked at the service center.

The D7000 will have a switch on the front, near the lens that you can change between AF and M. It must be in AF. If it is a Nikkor lens, it will have a similar switch that must be in AF. If it is an off brand, such as my Samyang 85mm, it will not have an AF switch and it must be manually focused. If you have a Nikkor lens, remove it and put it back on, making sure that it "clicks". Also, while it is off, look at the contacts of both the lens and camera. They must be clean and shiny. If all this fails, contact Nikon for a repair, hopefully under warranty.
