The Canon 1100d takes good quality photos but you will be jealous of other peoples dslr's considering it is such a cheap camera. I would recommend the 550d or 600d because they are built slighty better and you buy them used for really cheap. Try looking them up on ebay. Although I'm not an expert on Nikon I've heard good thing about the d3100 and d3200.

Flip a coin. They are both just tools. Neither is worth two cents when foisted by an unskilled user. Either will take marvelous photos when used by someone who has good skills. So bottom line, YOU are what is important, not one or the other of those cameras. Get whichever you like best, even if it is only because you like the looks of one more than the other. In the end, it is how well you learn to use it that matters. Just turing it on, putting it in Auto, and pushing the button will NOT provide you with the photos that I'm sure you are wanting to get with the camera.

They are both comparable and excellent entry level DSLRs. Go to a proper store and handle both and see how the ergonomics feel to you… Also, if you have any friends into photography, check with them about what brand they use so you can borrow some of their gear when needed.don;t discount Sony either… They Alpha's are decent even if they have less accessories than the other 2 brands.

Full Disclosure: I'm a Canon shooter.

Canon and Nikon are both world renown camera manufacturers and you can pick either one.
It would be best to look at them both in a store, handle them and ask questions. The pick the one that feels right for you.
