I would like to invest in a 50mm lens but I do not know which as there are different types like the 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor or the 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR FX. What is the difference between the two? Pros/Cons?

The 50mm f/1.8 D is an AF lens, so it requires a D90, D7000 or other advanced camera to focus. It will not autofocus on an entry level Nikon (D3xxx, D5xxx, D40, D60), as it requires a camera with a focus motor built-in to the camera.

If you have an entry level camera, you need the AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G as it has a focus motor built into the lens (as the entry level cameras have no autofocus motor).

Optically, they are both outstanding lenses.

The D has an aperture ring, but no motor.

The G has no aperture ring - you set the aperture on the camera body - but it does have a motor.

Which you buy depends on which camera model you have - and whether or not it has a body motor.

It looks to be that the only dfference is the lens mount.

Based on the info from the link above, the best choice would be the 50mm f/1.8 AF-S to preserve autofocus capabilities in all modes.

The other one won't autofocus with your camera.
