50mm Nikon prime for DX camera?

Tristan
Tristan

I have searched quite a bit and I can't seem to find a lens that is made for a DX Nikon camera that is also 50mm. Does anyone know where I could find one?
If I want a 50mm focal length on my D7000, should I just go with a zoom lens?

By the way; I tend to stick to primes because I can't spend much money per lens and I only shoot with certain focal lengths (And I love using bokeh of stopping down to f1.8 or down to f1.2) so I've always figured that primes are my best solution for being on a budget.
By the way; keep in mind I can't really spend more than $500 on this one

The D7000 can use the oler D series lenses so you can use the old Nikkor 50mm f1.4D or f1.8D. You can also use the newer "G" series lenses, both the F1.4 anf F1.8. However, on the crop sensor these will give an equivalent to a 75mm lens. For a 50mm equivalent you can use the Nikkor 35mm f1.4 or f1.8. The F1.4 is an FX lens which will still work on your DX body, the F1.8 is a DX lens

Here is what you need to understand about lenses for your D7000 with its 1.5x "crop factor":

On a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR a 50mm lens is considered a "normal" lenses because its angle of view approximates that of the human eye.

On your D7000 a 35mm lens will have the equivalent angle of view of a 52.5mm lens on a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR. Therefore, a 35mm lens on your D7000 would be considered a "normal" lens for it.

On a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR a focal length of between 85mm to 105mm is considered an ideal focal length for portraits.

On your D7000 a 50mm lens will have the equivalent angle of view of a 75mm lens on a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR. Therefore, a 50mm lens on your D7000 would be considered an adequate portrait focal length.

So if you want a prime lens that comes close to approximating how you see a scene with your eyes then the 35mm is the one you need. If you want to shoot portraits then the 50mm is the one you need.

Steve's answer just proves that great minds think alike. LOL!

How hard have you been looking?

ALL Nikon 50mm primes made in the last 40 years will work on your D7000. All of them.

You could save for a zoom lens, but keep in mind there are no zooms with wider aperture than f2.8. If you're really desiring that super wide aperture, then stick with maybe a 50mm f1.8 and Sigma's 30mm f1.4.It's within your budget.

Your question is going in different directions. You do realize that to have a "50mm focal length" with your camera, you need to use a 35mm lens, NOT a 50mm. The sensor on your camera has a "crop factor" of 1.5. A 50mm lens on the D7000 will give you an effective focal length of 75mm.

So if you want a 50mm focal length, you need a 35mm lens, (which actually gives you 52mm).

ADD: I see Edwin and I were answering at the same time. I did NOT copy his answer, but you can see we both agree on what you need.
