Nikon lens compatibility issue?
I'm posting this behalf of my friend. He owns a Nikon D5100 and he wants to know if this lens
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70 - 300 mm f/4-5.6G Lens

Is it compatible with his cam.
As far as I can tell that lens is compatible with your friend's camera. The lens mount for that camera is a Nikon F bayonet mount and that lens is a Nikon F bayonet mount. Your friend has an entry level (less expensive) Nikon body. While it is fully capable of producing images just as amazing as its $6,000 brother, the Nikon D4s, it does not have an auto-focus motor in it (why they cost less than $1,000), so the lenses your friend needs to buy are going to have to be Nikkor AF-S lenses. They have a built-in auto focus motor in the lens.
Yes, your friend can use the AF 70-300 mm lens, but they will have to learn how to use the electronic rangefinder to assure that their shots are in focus. The cameras meter will work just fine with any of the Nikkor AF lenses. As far as I can tell that lens is compatible with your friend's camera.
