I have a Nikon D70s body that I use for photo gigs and stuff but, I realized that I'm way out of date! I wanted to buy a new Nikon body but, a lot of them come with movie capability that I really don't need. Can anyone suggest a good replacement for this sturdy camera? Or should I even replace it at all and keep it as a back-up? I also have a Nikon SB 800 flash unit and will that work with a new body? Suggestions and answers would be really helpful.

If you want a step forward but with no video, look for a Nikon D3 with a relatively low shutter count. It was Nikon's first full frame DSLR, built like a tank and your SB-800 will work fine with it. I found one recently with about 80,000 clicks for around $825. If 80,000 sounds like a lot, then consider that it's rated for 300,000. Only a suggestion. As far as something new, I don't believe that Nikon is making anything that doesn't do video, but I could be wrong on that.

One of the D7xxx cameras will be a big step up and supports CLS that your SB800 uses. I have taken my D7000 on rough trips in to the bush without issue.

If you really want durability, then the D300 (obsolete) or D500. The D500 does well in low-light conditions and price just came down.

Movie mode is standard on modern DSLRs. If you don't need it, don't use it. Live View comes in handy sometimes, especially doing product shoots and macro work (able to do critical focusing).

Your SB800 will work on modern cameras.

Have you considered looking on the Nikon website to see for yourself?

Here is the linage of the D70

*D80
* D90
* D7000
* D7100
* D7200
* D7500

Any of the D7000 series would be a huge upgrade

Visit DP Review to compare those cameras and the Nikon website to see what those cameras cost, new and refurbished.

All current models do video nowadays. Worse, they all have LiveView too!

Do not let go of your D70 even if you get a new camera or you'll miss shooting with flash at 1/500s!

The equivalent of the D70 is the D7000 series so at the moment that would be the D7500. If you want an upgrade, I suggest you go for the D610 which is full-frame but your lenses might not work with it. If not get the D500 which is DX but an advanced model which is a step up from the D70 and D7000 series which are mid-range.

All of the current model DSLRs come with video to my knowledge. It doesn't really add anything to the price and you aren't required to use it. The only Nikon you might still find new without video is the D3000 and that's not too much of an upgrade from what you have. Something that would be an actual upgrade would be the D5100 or D7000. I've heard that the D7100 is due out soon or maybe already out (I don't follow Nikon that much) so you might want to wait for that.

If I were you I would keep the old camera if it still works well. I still have my Maxxum 5D and use it as a second camera more than occasionally. Except it's kind of annoying when people have to comment on the Konica Minolta brand. I've thought about taping over it lol.
