New Nikon DSLR to replace Nikon D70s?
I have a Nikon D70s body that I use for photo gigs and stuff but, I realized that I'm way out of date! I wanted to buy a new Nikon body but, a lot of them come with movie capability that I really don't need. Can anyone suggest a good replacement for this sturdy camera? Or should I even replace it at all and keep it as a back-up? I also have a Nikon SB 800 flash unit and will that work with a new body? Suggestions and answers would be really helpful: D
All of the current model DSLRs come with video to my knowledge. It doesn't really add anything to the price and you aren't required to use it. The only Nikon you might still find new without video is the D3000 and that's not too much of an upgrade from what you have. Something that would be an actual upgrade would be the D5100 or D7000. I've heard that the D7100 is due out soon or maybe already out (I don't follow Nikon that much) so you might want to wait for that.
If I were you I would keep the old camera if it still works well. I still have my Maxxum 5D and use it as a second camera more than occasionally. Except it's kind of annoying when people have to comment on the Konica Minolta brand. I've thought about taping over it lol.
Lets see. There was the D80, D90 and now the D7000 is the latest replacement for the D70s
Yes, the D70s is getting old but that in itself is no reason to upgrade… How is the D70s holding you back?
For better image quality, your money would be better spent on lens upgrades.
For landscape photography, your money would be better spent on a quality tripod.
For portraits, your money would be better spent on lighting equipment, etc.
A new body mostly brings the benefits of newer generation sensors: more megapixels and better high ISO performance. Are either of those issues your main priority?
A higher range body will additionally give you loads more autofocus points, more frames per second, a metal body with weather sealing, and extra buttons/ switches for faster access to your settings… So do you need any of that for your work?
Pick the features you need and the choice of body will follow.
The nearest replacement model for the D70s is the D7000. Thanks to a few years of progress, it's a better camera is just about every regard. A cheaper option is the discontinued D90.
I'd advise against getting a newer camera from a lower tier - the D3xxx and D5xxx series - as these models lack a few features compared even to your D70s. Most importantly, the entry level series can't auto-focus with AF-D lenses, and you can't use their pop-up flash to trigger your SB-800 remotely.
As for hanging on to the D70 after you upgrade, why not? You won't get much for it and having a backup body never hurts. I hung on to my D200 after getting a D700 and still actively use the old camera from time. Either for the extra reach (DX vs. FX sensor) or side-by-side with my new camera at events etc. Where I can't waste time switching lenses.
If you have any AF lenses (that require an in-camera motor for autofocusing), or want to use the SB800 remotely, you will want to go with a D90, D7000, or higher.
The D70 was an advanced amateur camera, so if you go with an entry-level D3100 or D5100, you will be losing the AF/remote speedlight commander functionality.
I gave my D70 to my son when I upgraded to a D90 a few years ago. He still uses it, and I'd rather him have it than get a couple hundred dollars for it on the used market.
Have Nikon D70s, need housing, my lens are good. Housing fit for my lens,
Replace NIKON D70s housing, my lens is .ok.
