How to edit photographs to get a glossy finish?

I'm a pretty amateur photographer currently shooting with a Nikon D90 and trying to find my way in respect of what i'm actually good at taking, i especially enjoy portraits of people and find i get great shots but i want to add the glossy look to some of them and simply can't figure out how.

I have paint shop pro x 5 and photoshop cs5 to work with, i can pretty much get any effect i want but am at a total loss when it comes to that glossy magazine look.

I know i could simply print them onto glossy paper but i would like to be able to edit the look onto them to view on my computer first if you see what i mean.

Can anyone help with this?

Added (1). Lots of interesting and somewhat conflicting opinions, having googled the subject i have found a plug in for CS5 that claims to gloss the images but have not yet decided if i should buy it as some of the sample images look metallic rather than glossy, i may well just print onto gloss paper the images i'm happy with.

Going to put this one to vote.

From what I know personally, I'm not sure you can. I use free editing programs with all the bells and whistles that your paid programs do and I can't find a glossy "finish" on any of them.

You can't, a glossy look is from the paper it's printed on, you would not be able to view a glossy look on your screen.

If you are into picture and wants to edit it and create more effects, just spend a few more hours with CS5 and you'll find everything in it. Usually if it's about the layer effects, you can find it in "layers" or "preference" but to give you a better point of view and more accurate 3D glossy effects, check out this link:

Hope this can help you and good luck to your new hobby. Cheers!

Using an external flash to light up your subjects might solve your problem.

Gloss is a print term… So print on glossy paper… Like the magazines do

or you could like to an image so we know what your asking, maybe its a look that your after not "glossy"?

The only way to make a glossy effect would be to overlay some reflected light, which would make part of your image not visible. It could be done in the same way you make glossy buttons for websites, but would be pointless.
