That is a good starting DSLR.
It is a little old though.
It also has been discontinued.
I would look at the Nikon D3100.
It is way better.
It also has full HD video. (It is still nice even if you do not care about video)

Here is a comparison between the two cameras.

The D3100 is a lot better.
If you have the money you could get the Nikon D3100, D3200, D5100, or the D5200.
You will be really happy with Nikon.
I would not look at any Canons.
I had 4 babied Canon cameras just die.
I would be using them and they would all just die out of the blue.
I switched to Nikon and I'm problem free.
You do not need the best camera out there to to take great pictures.
I have see people with little point and shoot cameras take great pictures.
I have also seen people with $5k cameras take trash pictures.
It will take some time to get good at photography.
Even when you are good you will never be good enough.
There's so much to learn!
Just stick to it and you will start getting good.
It took me forever to start getting good.
I just got a Speedlight flash and it is taking me awhile to figure out.
If you fail just keep on trying.
It took me 20min. To get a shot yesterday.
I just could not get what I wanted.
Even after that I still may have to take it into Photoshop to fix the exposure.
Have fun with photography.

My thoughts are not whether you deserve to buy this camera or not.

BUT, my concerns is how you came upon your decision?

If you read these pages and said to yourself I want a Nikon D5000, YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE!

If you went to the trouble of finding a place that sells this camera among others and compared what was available to you in terms how each handles, the locaton of controls, and most of all; how comfortable the camera was to view through. AND checked out the lenses (Nikon web site) and prices of lenses (places like B&H Photo).

Then if you can afford the basic camera and if it is available with say a 50-to-200mm lens in "kit" form which is cheaper than camera, a 28-50mm lens and a 50-200mm lens. I SAY: GO FOR IT!

I fully support you getting a DSLR, one of my lifes biggest regrets is that i didn't get into photography back when i was younger. I feel like a broken record, but my recommendation is a pentax K30 if your buying new. Even a Nikon D3200/D5100 if your stuck on nikon.

The only way id recommend a D5000 is if your getting it dirt cheap for $250 or less with a kit lens. I'm certainly not saying the D5000 will take bad pictures, but camera bodies like all technology quickly degrade in value. If you plan on doing indoor photos you want a camera with good low light performance and a fast prime lens. Like a 50mm F1.8. Some affordable 2nd hand cameras with good low light performance are Sony A580, Pentax K30 or K5, Nikon D5100, or D3200.

If your photography is mostly outdoors during daytime then pretty much any DSLR will take excellent photos depending on your lens.
