Does anyone make a decent price digital camera without the god awful LCD viewfinder?

I don't know much about them, my last camera was a nikon n80, it was a pleasure to use. What I'm having trouble with is the screen and the viewfinder if it has one, my eyes are not great and I find it very odd and difficult to look through a viewfinder and see a miniature screen, why do they do this? I can understand the regular 2 or 3 inch screen because of the menus but, holding a camera with my arms extended produces shaky shots for me when I can't rest it on my face and even the mid level dslr cameras have unimpressive viewfinder screens. Any info I will really be thankful for.

What exactly do you mean, "I can't rest it on my face and even the mid level dslr cameras have unimpressive viewfinder screens"

For decades we have been composing our images using the viewfinder and the show you from 97% to 100% of the actual image that will be recorded on the film or sensor.

I have been wearing glasses for over 30 years and adjust the view of my focusing screen by using the diopter on it.

If you still have the N80, you can use the same lenses on a Nikon dSLR. I'm surprised that you are okay looking through the viewfinder of the N80, but not a dSLR. They are very, very similar

Why don't you look at the d7100 when it gets released it will be a good upgrade to your d80 and i heard they are having a new viewfinder for it.

You use the viewfinder on a DSLR, they by their very design do not allow composing through the LCD screen as the mirror when in the down position, blocks the sensor from producing an image. The mirror is the key thing. When you have point and shoot cameras, they do not have a mirror and the sensor is always open to the lens, In those cases, the LCD is how you compose your shot, and your right, they are terrible. My D700 shows about 95% of what the sensor records, so a little bit is cut off. This is irritating, but the more you spend on a camera, the higher the chance it will show 100%. Itis really not that big of a deal, it has never stopped me from shooting.

Sounds like you either need to find a tripod or locate the button that turns off the LCD screen. I use that button when i'm taking pictures at night because the light from the LCD screen is distracting when I'm looking through the view finder. Also I don't think any camera has a screen in the view finder.

If you think the viewfinder image in Nikon DSLRs are small compared to your n80 it depends on which models you have been viewing and also what you define as a mid level DSLR. For a comparatively low cost an old D90 has a reasonable size screen for a DX camera and pentaprism cameras usually have a brighter viewfinder than pentamirror. For a larger viewfinder image try looking through a D600 viewfinder as it is a full frame (FX) camera like your n80 if you count a D600 as a mid level DSLR.
