The camera doesn't really matter. If you want to shoot portraits, then the thing you need is an 85mm lens with a fast aperture, say 1.8 or 1.4

Canon and Nikon are both good. Canon has an incredibly good 85mm lens for portraits but it's colossally expensive and it would be wasted on anything less than an advanced amateur.

The camera brand is irrelevant. All DSLRs are good. And there are more brands of DSLR available than just Nikon or Canon, such as Pentax, Sony, Olympus, Samsung, etc.

The number one thing on the list of factors which determine the quality of a photograph, is the skill of the photographer.

Next comes the quality of the optics (the lens). For camera's with cropped sensors, a 50mm lens, with a wide aperture such as f/1.8, is great. For full frame cameras, an 85mm (with wide aperture) is great

For portraits, lighting is also crucial.

Way down on the list comes the camera body itself - in fact it's probably the least important thing on the list of stuff that makes good photos.

Brand doesn't matter - Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Sony.

The lens is important.
For an APS-C camera - a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4
Full frame camera - an 85mm f/1.8 or f/1.4

Brand is irrelevant. What's most important is, on orde;
- skills of the photographer
- good lighting
- good lenses (the 85mm f1.8 or f1.4 is an excellent choice)

For your DSLR, there's a great deal to learn about it. I can be a complicated device if you don't know too much about it. I believe its the best thing out there right now. I will leave a link for you that tells you all about the camera that you are about to purchase. Good Luck.

The one you had in the past or i perfer canon. Because that's the ones i have lens for.
nikon and canon are great camera's but the glass in the lens is more important then the brand.
so is the lighting. Make sure to have the proper soft box set up and in the correct spots. On board/camera flash will ruin every shot you take.

It doesn't matter. They are both equally as good.
