Beginning photography advice?

I know nothing about photography and I'm not sure where to start, but I need a camera with high resolution. Any suggestions as to what I should start with? I'm not necessarily concerned about price. I just need a good camera for photography.

You probably don't actually need a camera with high resolution as much as you think. If you're like most people, your photos will mainly be displayed on a computer screen or even a phone. You don't need much resolution for those. If you're going to print massive posters, that's when you need a lot of resolution.

As for getting started, you could begin with a simple DSLR (the most popular kind of digital camera at the moment). They will let you start shooting straight away, but they have enough features to let you grow into them as you learn more. Most of them come bundled with a lens - and one camera, one lens and a memory card is all you need at first.

Go to a camera or electronics store in your area and ask to see the entry level DSLRs. The average store only has Canon and Nikon, and if that's the case then just choose whichever feels better to you. If anyone tells you flat out that one is better than the other, they are usually trying to sell one over the other! If the DSLR feels too big or you don't like the idea of lugging it around, you could look into mirrorless cameras or even good compacts. Size and weight are important if you are going to be using a camera a lot.

Whatever you end up with, you should look through the camera manual to get started, just to learn what does what. Don't get too obsessed with learning everything at once, though. Photography is something you learn by doing, so get out and take some pictures. Chances are that your first pictures won't be very good. Mine certainly weren't! Then as you shoot more and learn more (go to the local library and get a few books on photography aimed at beginners) they'll get a little better, then a little better again, and on it goes.

All modern cameras can take high resolution images. Even cheap point and shoots have 12 Megapixels or more. Which is more than enough for just about any purpose.

If you are really interested in learning about photography, and taking it up seriously as a hobby or further, the type of camera you need is a fully adjustable camera with interchangeable lenses. There are two main types of these, DSRLs and Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras. These are the types of camera you would need to take a digital photography class.
