Is the Nikon D40 DSLR a respectable camera for someone beginning a Photography hobby?
It's very respectable for a novice photographer. The D40 will connect you to the vast Nikon network, as every lens, flash, or accessory you get for it can be moved up whenever you upgrade. Being an entry-level Nikon DSLR, it doesn't have a built-in autofocus motor, and requires the motor to be in the lens. But every Canon DSLR is exactly the same.
The D40, even though it's been replaced by updated models, remains a good value and is capable of very fine photos.

Yes.
Yes, the D40 is a fine entry-level camera, but I have two concerns. My first thought was to the lens. If you're new to the Nikon DSLR line you probably do not have any lenses. If you're on a budget then you need to do careful research to figure out what would suit your needs. You can find used lenses for Nikon mounts everywhere. Secondly, if you're looking at the D40 specifically, you're looking at a used camera. Get one with the fewest possible shutter clicks, being aware that the shutter may begin to wear out as you approach 100, 000 clicks.
The good news is that any Nikon-compatible lenses you buy for the D40 can be used on any subsequent Nikon DSLR. I'm still using lenses that go back three decades on my D2X.
For just a bit more money than a D40… The D5000 which is a much more capable camera.
