There's very little to choose from most DSLR cameras at similar price points - everyone has a personal favourite.

The best thing to see if it's right for you (compared to other competitor's models) is to try them out in a camera store - compare button positions, menu choices, general 'feel' & weight & buy which one feels right for you.

The only downside to Sony is that out of all the popular manufacturers, Sony has a non-standard sized hotshoe, which means if you want to buy flash or off camera triggers, you need an adapter. This alone would make me avoid Sony cos I use flash a lot - but it may not be relevant to you.

Nikon use Sony sensors, but the main advantage of Sony over the Idiots' Two is that you can be seen as someone with the capacity to think for himself.

While others may produce more lenses, Sony (and Minolta) produce the ones you need and can afford.

It was a good camera. But could you afford the 580 because that was the best of the line before they went to the new arrangement with EVFs and semi-translucent mirrors?

Like any dSLR, in the right hands it can deliver stunning images. But it is an entry level dSLR and it's an old model so low light high ISO performance will be mediocre. It's fine if the price is right, and by right I mean cheap. The A380 with the basic kit lens it came with and accessories like battery, charger etc I would not pay more than about 250 US dollars give or take depending on condition and if the seller is throwing in a memory card or other items.

Sony's best performing traditional dSLR is the A580. For not much more money than a used A380, a newer A33, A35 or A37 might be better options.
