I have a nikons APS-C dslr d5200, I need recommendation for a good wide angle lens, wider than 18mm, with as little barrel distortion as possible. So what do you suggest?

I suggest not worrying too much about distortion, putting the camera on a tripod with a level and fixing important photos with software.

The 12-24 f4 is about as good as you'll get affordably

See the discussion about a bunch of wide angle zooms:

Distortion is already very evident at 18mm. What more if you go wider?

For low distortion buy a lens of single focal length, not a zoom. And note that it is up to you to use the lens in a way which will show as little distortion as possible. For instance, you must hold the camera absolutely horizontal, otherwise you will see "converging verticals" - that is a result of the laws of optics, no connection with the lens being good or bad.

You should find this interesting. See link. Samyang/Rokinon also makes a 14mm f2.8 as well as a 12mm f2.8 fish-eye(which, of course, distorts big time). I have the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and I like having that flexibility of the zoom. Good luck!

In order to prevent "distortion" you need to do two things

1) make sure that the cameras back is parallel to any walls in your shot.
2) make sure that when you are shooting landscapes that the horizon is straight.

Here is a link to a shot using a 12-24 mm lens at 12 mm

Do you see any distortion? Probably not because every effort was made to prevent a distorted photo.

It is very easy to get distortion when using a wide angle lens. It takes preplanning and some time to prevent distortion

Kills then after exact making that.
