This is probably not the answer you want, but here goes. The reason Nikon may not be as good as Canon with video on the DSLR is because a DSLR is not supposed to be a video camera. It is a STILL camera first and foremost. Any video feature is just a poor secondary feature. Personally, I wish I could slap the face of the bozo who first put a video feature into a DSLR. Maybe Nikon does not want to waste a lot of time and money trying to make their cameras do something for which they are not truly designed to do.

For video, you need a CAMCORDER. A DSLR has many limitations with video that a camcorder does not. That is because a camcorder is designed from the ground up to do VIDEO. A DSLR is designed from the ground up to be a STILL photo taking device.

Sort of like people wondering why the photos they get with their cell phone are not as good as a DSLR. You need the right tool for the job, and a DSLR is NOT the right tool for video.

Indeed the best sort of camera for general video work is a camera designed for video work, namely a camcorder.

DSLRs are stills cameras, they excel at this. Only an idiot would buy a stills camera to shoot video, particularly as a marginal video capability is added merely to increase sales.

Pentax (along with Canon and Nikon) make superb DSLRs, IF you use them for their intended purpose, but the DSLR hasn't been made that can't be blown out of the water by a mediocre camcorder - on the other hand, try shooting stills with a camcorder.
