When it comes to pricing Canon (an excellent product) does some funny things. A bridge camera that I was interested in was about to be discontinued in favor of a more advanced model with video enhancements, Video means nothing to me. I waited thinking that Canon would lower the price on the model I liked.NO! Canon raised to price of the older model to match that of the current model. Needless to say I did not buy the one I was interested in!

The 40D was a very good camera. It had a suggested retail price of $1099 in 2007.

The price is higher now for an unopened box because those are rare.

The Canon 40D was a terrific camera but is now discontinued. So, I guess the rarity of it puts the price up.

Snapsort and amazon market place are the problem.

The prices reflect what the camera might have cost at one time, not current prices, used that camera in good condition is about 1/4th the price listed. The Nikon D5000 is probably closer to 200-300 US dollars. Between the two I'd take the 40D. The D5000 from Nikon doesn't even have an auto focus motor, and it's made out of plastic.

The Canon is semi pro with a mag alloy body and weather sealing. The image sensor performance between the two is very close.
