Better SLR cameras? I'd have to say Nikon on this one, primarily because canon switched lens mounts in 1988 and any camera system afterwards can't use the FD lenses. Quality wise, however, they were pretty much equals

but if you are talking about modern day DSLR cameras, i'd have to say both, or neither, meaning neither is better while the other worse. They are equals.

It is hard to say since professionals use one or the other or both to do their jobs.

Pick one and start building your system. You may want to do a LOT of research before committing to one system over the other since the one you choose will be the one you will be using for decades.

Spend some time looking on the following websites and then make many visits to your local camera store holding your choices in your hands. It could take up to six months or more before you can decide which camera system is best for YOUR use, NOT ours

Canon Camera's entry level up to 60D would be the best except for Nikon D7000 which is better than 60D. Canon 5D Mark II is better than all Nikon excepts for D3X and D3S because it has lower noise above 800 ISO.

I like Canon the best, but for now, I would give a slight edge toward Nikon D7000 because it's the best value for the money, unless you're willing to afford Canon 5D Mark II which has lower noises above 800 ISO.
