Which Nikon bodies can use AF-S lens?

I currently own a body that requires AF-S lens' which are a tad bit more expensive. Which makes since, my body doesn't have the silent wave motor that the "better" bodies that don't require the -S, so I understand the price difference. What I'm struggling with is should I start investing in AF-S lens? Will they grow with me when I want a new body? Or should I forgo my body now and upgrade to a body that uses only AF lens, which I know will continue onto the big boys!

All bodies can use the AF-s lenses. Just the low end ones REQUIRE them. If you are investing in GOOD lenses, then yes, start investing. If you are investing in consumer grade lenses then invest in a better body instead.
The difference in compatiblity will be the DX and FX lenses. DX lenses can only be used on small frame sensors such as the entry level D3000 and D5000 series, the DXX series and the D7000.
FX lenses can be used on both small frame cameras and full frame cameras such as the D3, etc.

AF-S lenses, with their built-in autofocus motors, are 100% compatible with every Nikon DSLR, past, present, and future. In fact, they are, with adaptor, compatible with the new Nikon 1 compact camera system that was just announces a couple of days ago.

You can use an AF-S lens with a D40, D3000, all the way up to a D3s or D3x professional cameras.

By the way, to correct some information you have received, DX lenses are maximized for DX cameras which have smaller sensors. You CAN use them on FX (full-size) sensor cameras such as the D700, or D3 series, as Nikon has wisely designed those cameras to switch to DX mode when those lenses are mounted. So, you can buy FX lenses for 100% upgrade compatibility, or buy DX lenses for limited, but still useful upgrade compatibility.
