Which is the better lens: Nikon 50mm f1.4 or f1.8?
Which is the better lens: Nikon 50mm f1.4 or f1.8?
F1.4.It allows more light into the lens so it offers a greater flexibility. It allows you to capture an image under less light than the 1.8.It offers a slight advantage to capturing a faster moving object. It also has a tad bit less depth of field that can be exploited if needed.
Always opt for a faster lens (1.4 is faster than 1.8) whenever possible.
The light difference is tiny. The 1.4 is built a bit better and a bit sharper from wide open to about f4.
I used to own a 50mm 1.8 from new. I sold it to get a 1.4, but I wish I'd kept the 1.8 because it was good enough for me. Yes, the 1.4 is faster an has a shallower DOF.
The 1.4 is very expensive, compared. If I could turn back time, I would go back to the trusty 1.8.
1.4 has better build quality (it's considered a premium lens), however there's no significant difference across 50mm lenses, the designs have changed little since the 1950's, and the coatings have more or less been the same in the past 10 years.
