The FM-2 has a greater range of very short shutter speeds and generally is a more modern manual camera. But really, if you are happy with your Canon stick with it. Why do you want to make the change? Itchy feet or a serious problem with the Canon? I assume that you don't have a large investment of lenses with the Canon - if you do, they would be not usable with the Nikon.

Don't forget that it is the photographer that makes the photo, the camera of whatever brand is merely the technical adjunct.

The FM2's great advantage comes mainly in the durability and forward compatibility. However from useage the cameras from that era are all really more or less the same. The Nikon will have marginally better selection of lenses, but they are also more expensive.

The thing is, for the Price of an FM2 you could get a Canon F1 or a T90 both of which are more capable cameras.

They're equally good. As you've already got the Canon, stick with it. If you've got cash to burn, buy some more FD lenses for it. They're quite cheap on eBay these days.

There's nothing wrong with an AE-1.It's photographers, not cameras, that make pictures.
I still use my old Exactas and a Canon FTb as well as several other oldies.
The AE-1 is a very nice camera with some excellent lenses available for it.
Up to you if you want to spend money on another camera but that AE-1 will still produce good results however many other cameras you have.
